If it is true that design has power to inform people’s thoughts then it is also true that the prospect of using design to positively change the world is an alluring proposition. An article entitled ‘Can Designers Save the World?’ by Nico Macdonald kindled in me the idea that designers have both the opportunity and the skills necessary to effect positive change in the world.
The theme for this book, environment issues, has, for some, become contentious. Others find the subject wearisome – they are jaded. To speak to these groups requires a presentation that allows them to uncover or unveil information for themselves. Thus the title – Revelations. The choice of pages that require ‘opening’ is also meant to be symbolic of the process of revealing information for themselves.
The form of this book makes the reader part of the process of creating the work - part of the process of uncovering and revealing ideas. It is hoped that this kind of interaction personalises the subject for the reader. Books bound in this way end up with rough or ‘feathered edges.’ They are not pristine machine-cut edges - it’s a kind of deliberate 'imperfection'.
